Frequently asked questions

Why convert JPG to AVIF?

AVIF compresses much better than JPG: a photo is often a quarter to a half of the JPG's size at a similar look, so web pages load faster. All current browsers show AVIF.

Why does each photo take a few seconds?

AVIF takes more work to encode than JPG, and the encoder runs on your device. A large photo can take several seconds, and longer on a phone.

How many files can I convert?

There is no limit on the number of files. Files are converted one at a time, so a large batch simply takes longer. Very large images, such as 48-megapixel photos, may fail on phones with little memory; a computer handles them.

Is the photo information kept?

No. Converting to AVIF copies the picture but not the photo information: the date, camera and location are not written into the new file.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device. The page only downloads the tool's own code when you add the first file.
