How to use
- Click “Choose files” or drop your Word files (.docx) onto the box. You can add several at once.
- Each file is converted to Markdown on your device as soon as it is added. Check the text, copy it, or save it as a .md file. A document with pictures is saved as a ZIP of the .md file and its pictures; several documents are saved together in one ZIP.
Frequently asked questions
What is kept, and how does it look?
Headings become # to ######, bullet and numbered lists keep their nesting, tables become Markdown tables with the first row as the header, and bold, italic and strikethrough, links, pictures and footnotes are carried over. Tracked changes are read as if accepted, and the text of text boxes is placed after the paragraph that holds them.
What is left out?
Headers, footers, comments, the table of contents field (rebuild it from the headings), fonts, colours and sizes, page layout, and anything Markdown has no form for: shapes, charts, SmartArt, equations and embedded objects. The result lists what was left out. Document properties such as the author are not written into the Markdown.
Which files can I convert?
.docx, .docm, .dotx, .dotm files: the current Word format, with or without macros, and templates. Macros are not run. The older .doc format and password-protected files are not supported: open them in Word and save them as .docx without a password first.
What happens to the pictures in the document?
They are saved in their original format in an images folder next to the Markdown, which links to them as images/image1.png and so on. The two are downloaded together as a ZIP file. Text inside pictures is not read; use Image to Text for that.
Are my files uploaded to an outside server?
No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device. The page only downloads the tool's own code when you add the first file.
