Convert Excel to Markdown

Turn an Excel workbook into Markdown tables to paste into ChatGPT, Claude, a wiki or a README. Each sheet becomes a heading and a table, and the file stays on your device.

or drop them here

Files are processed on your device and never sent to an outside server.

How to use

  1. Click “Choose files” or drop your Excel files (.xlsx) onto the box. You can add several at once.
  2. Each file is converted to Markdown on your device as soon as it is added. Check the text, copy it, or save it as a .md file. A document with pictures is saved as a ZIP of the .md file and its pictures; several documents are saved together in one ZIP.

Frequently asked questions

How is a workbook converted?

Each sheet becomes a heading with its name and one Markdown table, in workbook order; hidden sheets are included and marked. The first row with content is the header row. Formulas give their last calculated value, dates are written as YYYY-MM-DD (with the time when the cell shows one), numbers are written as stored without their format, and merged cells keep their value in the top-left cell. Empty rows and columns around the data are dropped.

What is left out?

Charts, shapes, SmartArt, pivot table settings, comments, colours, fonts and column widths. Pictures placed on a sheet are saved under images/ and linked after the table. Very large sheets are cut after the first 100,000 cells, and the result says so.

Which files can I convert?

.xlsx, .xlsm, .xltx, .xltm files: the current Excel format, with or without macros, and templates. Macros are not run. The older .xls format and password-protected files are not supported: open them in Excel and save them as .xlsx without a password first.

What happens to the pictures in the document?

They are saved in their original format in an images folder next to the Markdown, which links to them as images/image1.png and so on. The two are downloaded together as a ZIP file. Text inside pictures is not read; use Image to Text for that.

Are my files uploaded to an outside server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device. The page only downloads the tool's own code when you add the first file.
