Frequently asked questions

Is this a legally valid electronic signature?

This tool only lays an image of your signature or seal over the PDF. It is not a digital signature made with a certificate, and it does not prove who signed or that the document was not changed; a PDF editor can also move or remove the image. For documents that need legal effect, use an e-signature service or a certificate.

Can I add a signature to a digitally signed PDF?

Yes, but its existing digital signature will no longer be valid, because adding the image rewrites the PDF. If the PDF is signed, you are asked before it is saved.

What kind of image should I use?

A PNG with a transparent background works best: only the ink shows, so the text under it stays visible. A JPG with a white background also works, but its white rectangle covers what is under it. The image is read in your browser and never sent anywhere.

Can I sign a password-protected PDF?

No. PDFs with a password are not supported, including those that only restrict printing or copying: rewriting them would remove the protection. Remove the password in your PDF app first, then sign that copy.

Are my files uploaded to an outside server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device. The page only downloads the tool's own code when you add the first file.
