Rename multiple files at once

Give many files new names by rules, and check every new name before you download. Nothing is uploaded to an outside server.

Files are processed on your device and never sent to an outside server.

How to use

  1. Choose the rules: keep the name or use the date taken, replace text, add a prefix, suffix or number, and tidy the characters.
  2. Click “Choose files” or drop your files onto the box. Any type of file works.
  3. Check the new names in the list. Change the order by dragging a file by its number or with the arrows; names that cannot be used are marked in red.
  4. Press “Download as ZIP” to get renamed copies of your files. Your original files stay as they are.

Frequently asked questions

What happens to my original files?

Nothing. The tool makes copies with the new names and gives them to you in a ZIP file. Your original files keep their names, and the contents of each file are not changed.

What if a photo has no date taken?

The date comes from the photo’s EXIF information (JPG, PNG, WebP and HEIC). Videos, screenshots and photos whose information was removed have none. For those files, choose to keep the original name or to use the date the file was modified. Photos taken in the same second get _2, _3 at the end. The time is the camera’s clock as recorded, not converted to another time zone.

Is there a limit on the number or size of files?

The ZIP is not compressed, so it is about as large as your files together, and it cannot exceed 4 GB. Each file is read once to build the ZIP, so large files take longer. In our test on a computer, a ZIP with a 1 GB video took about 6 seconds. How much your browser can handle depends on your device.

Why is a file marked in red?

Its new name cannot be used: another file would get the same name (upper and lower case count as the same), or the name contains a character that Windows or macOS does not allow (\ / : * ? " < > |), ends with a space or a period, is a name Windows reserves (such as CON or NUL), or is too long. Change the rules until no file is marked.

Are my files uploaded to an outside server?

No. Everything runs in your browser, so your files never leave your device. The page only downloads the tool's own code when you add the first file.
